Goodbye

The chapter concludes with each of the ten visiting bodhisattvas reciting verses praising the Buddha, his wisdom, and the miracles they witnessed. This solidifies the magnificence of the setting and prepares the assembly for the teaching that Samantabhadra will deliver in the following chapter.

Chapter Summary

Śākyamuni Buddha is in Jetavana in Śrāvastī with five thousand bodhisattvas and five hundred śrāvakas. In their minds, they desire a teaching, and thus the Buddha enters samādhi, and countless Buddha-realms appear there within a vast kūṭāgāra. Bodhisattvas also come to Śrāvastī from other realms. The śrāvakas, lacking the necessary merit, are unable to see this miraculous display.

The Buddha stands in a magnificently adorned kūṭāgāra (pavilion) in Jetavana, preparing for a great teaching. The chapter serves as the cosmic backdrop for the entire sutra.

Teaching

In response to the request, the Buddha does not offer a verbal teaching. Instead, he enters the samādhi called "The Lion's Roar" (Gaping Lion). This meditative act is the teaching itself, a manifestation of power that transforms reality and sets the stage for the revelations that will follow.
